Sur-Ron Mods: The Best Upgrades for the Light Bee X
The Sur-Ron Light Bee X is bought as much for what it can become as for what it is out of the crate. Its aftermarket is deeper than any other electric dirt bike, and a well-chosen set of upgrades transforms it — but the order you do them in matters, and some popular mods should wait.
Here is our recommended upgrade path, from the changes that improve every ride to the big-ticket performance parts. For parts that fit, see parts & upgrades and batteries & chargers.
First: suspension and brakes
The stock Light Bee suspension and brakes are the components most riders outgrow first, and they are the upgrades that make the bike safer and more enjoyable immediately. Better fork internals or a full aftermarket fork, a rear shock with proper adjustment, and upgraded brake pads or a larger rotor are the changes we recommend before anything else.
These are not glamorous mods, but they are the ones that pay back every single ride and let you use the power the bike already has.
Second: ergonomics and contact points
Bar risers, a taller or firmer seat, wider footpegs and better grips cost relatively little and dramatically change how the bike fits — especially for taller adults, since the stock Light Bee is compact. Getting the riding position right also reduces fatigue on longer rides.
Tyres are part of this too: a proper dirt tyre in the right compound for your terrain transforms grip and confidence far more cheaply than any electronic upgrade.
Third: battery
A bigger or higher-output battery is the upgrade that adds both range and, on many packs, more sustained power. Options from Chi Battery Systems, eWatt and EBMX range from a straight capacity increase to a full high-voltage conversion. The batteries & chargers range covers what fits the Light Bee X.
Do this after suspension and brakes — a faster bike on stock suspension is less fun and less safe than a stock-power bike that handles well.
Fourth: controller and motor
An aftermarket controller (and, at the top end, a motor swap) unlocks the biggest power gains, and it is where the Light Bee starts to genuinely outrun an Ultra Bee HP. This is also where you take on the most risk: more power stresses every other component, warranties are affected, and setup matters.
Save this for last, do it when the rest of the bike is ready for it, and be honest about whether you have outgrown the platform — at some point a bigger bike is the better answer than a heavily modded small one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first Sur-Ron mod I should do?
Suspension and brakes. The stock Light Bee X components are what most riders outgrow first, and upgrading them makes the bike safer and better on every ride before you add any power.
Does modding a Sur-Ron void the warranty?
Performance modifications — especially controller, motor and battery changes — can affect warranty coverage on the affected components. Check with us before major electrical upgrades so you understand what stays covered.
Should I mod a Light Bee X or buy an Ultra Bee?
If you want more suspension travel, range and a full-size feel, the Ultra Bee HP is the cleaner answer than heavily modding a Light Bee. Mod the Light Bee if you value its low weight and want to keep it nimble.
